Plywood Substrate For Granite Under Table Top
I am helping my sister install her 3 4 quartz countertop this week.
Plywood substrate for granite under table top. The cabinets are job built currently nothing on top of them. Granite table tops can be used both indoor and outdoors. The type and thickness of plywood you use depend on the weight and type of the finish material. I bought 5 8 cdx for the counter to sit on.
Do you think i will need more support under the mdf substrate to keep the 500 pound granite table top from cracking. Any advice would be appreciated on this. How do i attach the slab to my table assembly. I also plan on setting a stainless steel undermount sink.
I have a granite remnant left over from a kitchen remodel and want to use it as a top for a coffee table. I m guessing drilling into the granite is not an option. What would you guys reccomend. I m not sure if it needs it or not.
On top of that will be a 60 inch diameter sheet of mdf 3 4 inch which will serve as the substrate to glue a 72 inch diameter granite table top 1 1 4 inch thick. 3cm granite does not need underlayment. Many won t stand behind them anyway due to its nature. Quartz table tops are designed for indoor use.
So you might use a plywood substrate to help replicate a thicker top or to reinforce poorly built cabinets or to help maintain position by adhering the stone to it or for other practical reasons but you don t do it to support stiffen or strengthen the stone. I ve seen several overhangs snap from not so hard hits. Finished installing cabinets for my kitchen and getting ready to call a vendor to take measurements for granite slab. So the reason it doesn t sound like he s going to put decking underneath the granite.
Their plywood core helps reduce the weight of the top significantly. I don t know enough about her granite but if it s 3 4 inch granite lets talk in terms that i can. Quartz table tops are about five times stronger than granite table tops and require zero maintenance outside of daily cleaning. Drive masonry screws through these holes into the granite to secure it.
In general should i be putting in 5 8 or 3 4 plywood on top of these cabinets to receive slab. In your experience how long does it take for the smell of cdx fir to go away. Sides and top are 3 8 thick quartz. That would take something much more substantial and rigid such as the vertical.
Use a power drill with a masonry bit to predrill holes through the plywood on the table frame into the underside of the granite. The weight of the granite will keep the table top in place but if you prefer you may attach it directly to the table frame. She is complaining about the smell of the cdx and that she would like to use something without added formaldehyde because that s what all her cabinets are. However i highly recommend support for overhangs over 9 because while granite is hard and strong to a point it is brittle.
